Sri Lanka Unveils Long-Awaited Digital Nomad Visa

Sri Lanka has become the latest country to unveil a dedicated digital nomad visa for foreign remote workers.

Discussions about launching the visa first began a few years ago, and Sri Lanka has now decided to move forward and open its doors to location‑independent workers, following in the footsteps of other Asian countries like Thailand and Malaysia.

According to Euro News, the Sri Lanka digital nomad visa lasts for approximately one year, giving travellers the chance to settle and work in the country for a meaningful stretch of time. The visa can be renewed annually.

Sri Lanka digital nomad visa requirements

Those considering a longer working stay in Sri Lanka will need to earn a minimum of US$2,000 per month to qualify. Applicants must also be over 18, pay an application fee of US$500 per individual and work for companies or clients based outside Sri Lanka.

The fee structure is simple: US$500 per year for the main applicant, US$500 for a spouse and US$500 for each dependant. Notably, successful applicants must “refrain from any political or disruptive activities” while in the country.

Per Travel Tomorrow, applicants will need to submit several pieces of information via the Sri Lanka Department of Immigration and Emigration website, including a photocopy of their passport, a medical clearance report and proof of income.

Once accepted, Sri Lanka digital nomad visa holders will be able to open a bank account in the country and enrol children at international and private schools, along with a range of other benefits.

Sri Lanka offers plenty of bases for digital nomads

From the capital Colombo to coastal favourites like Weligama and Galle, Sri Lanka offers no shortage of places to settle in and set up a base while working remotely.

Add in the island’s food, nature and famously warm hospitality, and it’s easy to see why remote workers and digital nomads want to stay for longer. The new visa simply makes that choice even easier.
